​Swelling, Aches, and “Pregnancy Feet”

Pregnancy is beautiful. But let’s be honest—it’s also a wild ride for your body. Swollen ankles, puffy hands, achy hips, and that feeling like your body doesn’t quite fit you anymore. Many women just assume it’s something you “have to put up with.”

The truth? You don’t.

Your lymphatic system—the body’s natural fluid management system—can make a huge difference in keeping swelling down, easing tension, and helping you feel more comfortable as your pregnancy progresses.
A Step-by-Step Plan with Lymph Drainage + Massage
Here’s how I recommend weaving lymph drainage and massage into your pregnancy journey:
Early Pregnancy (Month 1–4)
  • What’s happening: Hormones are shifting, blood volume is increasing, and your body is already working overtime.
  • What to do: Start with a 75-minute combo session (lymph drainage + massage). Think of this as laying the foundation—helping your body adjust to all the new demands.
  • How often: Book every month, so you’re supported throughout your journey. (Trust me, this is one of those things you’ll depend on.)
Mid Pregnancy (Month 5–6)
  • What’s happening: Swelling often starts to show up—hello, ankles. Extra fluid retention can make you feel puffy and sluggish.
  • What to do: Keep up your combo sessions. This is also the time I recommend adding compression wear. Gentle, medical-grade compression stockings or leggings can help prevent swelling from building up and support circulation.
Late Pregnancy (Month 7–9)
  • What’s happening: Baby is growing, organs are shifting, and your body is carrying a lot of extra fluid. Discomfort can creep in—low back pain, sore ribs, restless legs.
  • What to do: Stick with your monthly 75-minute combo appointments and add a 45-minute Lymph Drainage appointment half way between your combo appointments. Lymph drainage helps keep swelling manageable, while massage eases those muscle aches and tension. Many of my clients say these sessions are the only time they feel truly relaxed during the third trimester.

  • Compression adds an extra layer of daily support, especially when paired with treatments.

As a massage and lymphatic drainage therapist, Jennifer brings not only her professional expertise but also a compassionate, understanding approach to her work. Her lived experience means she is never intimidated by working with children who require special care—she is patient, intuitive, and fully attuned to creating a calm, supportive environment tailored to each child's comfort and well-being.
    You can also find her teaching therapeutic yoga classes in Calgary and has an extensive library of classes online. She has been teaching yoga classes in Calgary for over 15 years.
